Your Guide to The Best Hairstyles for Different Necklines

Writer: Aliza SchorrAliza Schorr

Prom and wedding season are officially upon us, which means stunning dresses, glowing makeup, and the thing that begs the biggest question, “What do I do with my hair!?”. Choosing the right hairstyle to coordinate with your dress can be crucial to tying your look all together, but also can be a difficult choice. Here is the Kith + Kin fool-proof guide to which hairstyle will work best for you, no matter the occasion.

Halter Neckline:

A messy low bun or a half up half down style will perfectly align with the halter in highlighting your shoulders and neck. Having your hair pulled away from the focal point lets your dress do the talking, and also keeps you worry free without having hair in your face!

High/Turtleneck Neckline:

With a neckline as commandeering as a high neck, its best to choose a hairstyle that won't compete with that, so something simple is key. Consider a high ponytail or a high bun for your night out. A single french braid may also be a good choice if your looking for a hint of whimsy.

Square Neckline:

A square neckline reads chic, clean and bold, so without a doubt you want a hairstyle to match. A slicked back ponytail is a go to, but if you're feeling wild, chopping into a blunt bob is a stunning choice (if you're really trying to commit to the bit).

Off the Shoulder Neckline:

For such a romantic neckline, a romantic hairstyle should be right there with it. A playful messy updo, maybe with some twists and braids would suit well. If you're more of a hair down type of person, bouncy loose curls will keep you looking enchanted.

Strapless Neckline:

A strapless neckline feels like a true blank slate! With something so versatile, you can really do anything. When it comes to strapless, you can really use your hair to play into the theme or location of the event. Some of our favorites are a sleek updo (think french twist), a low ponytail or completely down, either straight or a hollywood wave.

V-neck/Sweetheart Neckline:

Any sort of side-swept style, like a side braid or curls pulled over one shoulder are going to do wonders of working with these feminine necklines to accentuate your chest and neck area. You may also opt for a low updo if you're looking for something more worry free.

In the end, the right hairstyle can make all the difference in highlighting your dress’s neckline and bringing your whole look together. Next time you’re getting ready for a special occasion, remember: your hairstyle is just as important as your dress!
