Highlights vs Balayage: Which one suits you?

Writer: Aliza SchorrAliza Schorr

When you decide to lighten your hair, you may be confused by terms like “highlight” and “balayage”. If you're new to the world of hair color, you're probably wondering, “What are these?” and “How different could they be?”. We are here to explain the two and provide insight into which service fits your lifestyle the most.

A balayage is best suited for guests who like to have brighter hair without the need to visit a salon on a regular schedule. Since the lightener is rarely applied all the way to the scalp, it produces a longer-lasting blended look. Traditionally, balayage is a form of hair lightening that involves painting lightener (bleach) onto the hair in a pattern that mimics a sun-kissed look. Originally, this technique didn’t use foils and instead the lightener is left open-air to produce a natural result. In recent years, the hair industry has evolved and a balayage is a lot more customizable. These days, you may see stylists using foils and boards, and even teasing your hair to achieve a desired result. Whether you come every 8 weeks or every 6 months is up to you. Choosing a balayage guarantees a stunning grow out with no harsh lines, so if you're the low maintenance type, this is for you.

Now, for the hair industry classic: highlights. Highlights are for you if your desired result is bold, dramatic, and as bright as possible. During a highlight service, foils are always used to promote a lighter lift, and the lightener is always applied all the way to the scalp. Like balayage, a highlight service is highly customizable. You can opt for bold streaks, subtle highlights, or anything in between. Highlights are also an ideal option for guests with gray hair looking to blend it in rather than cover it up entirely. Regardless of the style you select, highlights require maintenance every 6 to 8 weeks. If you are willing to do frequent upkeep and want that “I grew it myself” look, highlights are for you.

Ask yourself the following questions when booking your next lightening service: Do I want my hair to look lived-in or fresh? Am I able to go to the salon frequently to maintain the look?

You can't go wrong with either. Remember, your stylist is always there to guide you in your decision and answer any questions you may have.
